We grew up in Christian homes and watching strong Christian marriages being modeled. After being married in 1969, we moved to San Jose where Tim had accepted a position with IBM. Becoming involved with a church we began serving in a number of leadership roles and rearing two children.
Despite the fine modeling from our childhood we had few skills for resolving the conflicts that naturally occur in marriage. No one in our church or community knew of the pain between us! Agreeing that legal divorce was not an option, we simply became emotionally divorced, leading separate lives while living in the same house.
In 1979 we attended a FamilyLife Conference which is sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. There we learned about God's blueprint for marriage and the scriptural tools to resolve conflict. After nine years of struggle our marriage was transformed. Seeing the pain in others’ marriages, God burdened our hearts and we began helping with successive FamilyLife conferences. In 1988 we began serving as City Ministry Directors for the San Francisco Bay Area conference and also trained as volunteer staff traveling to other cities to help administer and coordinate the Resource Center at their conferences.
As the excitement of being involved with the Family Life work and of seeing lives changed as a result began to eclipse the joys and successes of our other work and ministries, we began to sense God’s call. We joined Campus Crusade for Christ as full time staff in 1995.
At every conference, people come to a saving knowledge of Christ and of God’s Lordship.\There were just over 600 people in attendance, with many people traveling from a distance because Miami is a destination city. We were privileged to work with a young couple who shared on Friday that his unsaved parents had agreed to come to the conference, just to see what they were doing there. All weekend long we prayed that they would come to know the Lord-and they did! What rejoicing for a young man who had become the first believer in his family at a conference 2 years before.
The most amazing conference story came on Saturday of that same weekend. A couple, who were there from out of state, had an argument. The husband became so angry that he went upstairs, packed his bag and boarded the shuttle bus to the airport. He was intending to go home without her! While he was on that shuttle bus, a message came over the radio. It was a man's voice saying that a gentleman on the shuttle needed to return to the hotel. It was important for his life. Somehow he knew that message was for him. He returned to the hotel and was counseled by the prayer team. He accepted Christ at almost the same moment his wife was doing the same with the women of the prayer team. They reconciled and promised to work on re-building the marriage! Here's the kicker! After investigation, no one could be found who had sent that message to the shuttle! The Holy Spirit was wooing the lost to the Lord.
At every conference there are people like the older gentleman who recently shared with the crowd on a Sunday afternoon. He began by stating that he and his wife were believers and after years of marriage they had been separated for two years. He went on to say friends had asked them to attend the conference prior to filing for divorce. What he had heard during the weekend had convinced him that he had been selfish with his wife and acknowledged his part in the wounding of their marriage. Image the tears when he asked for a renewal of their vows. They would be returning home-together! Praise God! That made all the struggles of the weekend worth every last drop of sweat.
While working at a FamilyLife Conference in Boise, Idaho we met a young couple named Wayne and Ruth. They lived the same busy lives as any other dual income couple with four children. They were volunteering to help in the Resource Center after having been involved with the FamilyLife Conference for a few years. As we worked with them over the weekend we discovered they too and a heart for families. Our hearts were bonded and a friendship established. We worked with them again the following year and began to encourage them to become involved with the ministry on a full time basis. Over the next few years we stayed in touch even after we reported to our full-time assignment with the ministry. We were thrilled when Wayne and Ruth contacted us to say they, too, had heard God's call to full time ministry and would come on staff with FamilyLife. They are now in Little Rock helping to plan and produce FamilyLife Conferences. Their lives are touching thousand of families every year. We like to think of Wayne and Ruth as part of the process of the multiplication of workers for Christ and are privileged to have had a part in their call to the work.
Since joining the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ, we have seen God provide for all of our needs through the consistent financial support of a team of ministry partners. Because Campus Crusade has no central funds for paying salaries, this team has provided the only income for our family and ministry.
Due to the changing needs of our family we are looking for additional partners to join with us in reaching families. Because we believe that God has called us to this, we are confident that He will continue to provide for us. We are praying that God would raise up a number of families and individuals who would give $50, $75, or $100 a month to support our ministry. We are dependent on these new partners in order to continue to serve effectively.
Perhaps God would move in your heart to invest in our work at FamilyLife. If so, we’d be grateful, and would love to communicate with you further about our ministry and how you can be a part of it.
Like a bicycle without wheels, we simply couldn't function without the prayer and financial support of our ministry team. Campus Crusade for Christ staff members depend on the consistent financial support of concerned individuals to carry on their ministry. Contributions from individuals are the only source of income to support our ministry. Our partners allow us to focus our efforts on bringing timeless principles to the homes of a needy world. We invite you to prayerfully consider joining with us as financial partners in the race to save the family. We can assure you that the Lord will use you powerfully in the lives of people all over the world and will bless you for your willingness to share.
